April & Gellyn Engagement

April, the Southern Belle and Gellyn, the Haitian Sensation…lol. This couple has to be one of the funniest and my all time favorites. I’ve known Gellyn since quarter juices and frozen cups so when I got the call they were looking for a photographer (Thank You Yashica), I said, ”COUNT ME IN!”
Watching April and Gellyn interact is like seeing two bad kids on the playground who have crushes on one another. The chemistry between these two is undeniable; they should really have their own reality show. When I asked the couple how they met, there were two completely different stories. If you let April tell it, Gellyn was a young schoolboy passing notes through a friend, which he adamantly refutes. According to Gellyn, it was all part of his master plan. Although, I am still unclear of the “real” story, what it is evident is the love between the two.
When planning this engagement shoot, I knew I wanted to capture the big personalities of the couple. While April and Gellyn wanted to appease their families and have a traditional studio session, I convinced them to take it to the next level. These images had to tell a story and illustrate the essence of their love and their playful interactions. In order to pull off this concept, I solicited help from my super friends, Apuje Kalu for the styling/creative direction, Jay Fierce on hair/make-up and fellow photog Louis Samuel. Apuje pulled pieces from April and Gellyn’s personal clothing to put together all of the looks and Jay worked with him on the hair and make-up to complement the looks. Getting professional hair/mua & styling for these shoots are well worth the investment because the picture are forever.
I was truly blessed to have had the opportunity to shoot the “April and Gellyn” Show and look forward to shooting their Haitiansissippian Wedding in the fall…lol. Take a look at the engagement session below. Comment & Enjoy!
